Safe Weight Loss: Why Diets Don’t Work

Every time we open up a magazine or newspaper, go online or turn on the television we are reminded about the obesity problem being faced by the western world. Most people who are overweight don’t want reminding of the fact. They often ask themselves ‘how can I lose weight safely?’ but often the only course of action they can think of is to go on a diet.

Unfortunately the majority of people are victims of the so called modern lifestyle they lead-a lifestyle which includes poor nutrition, extra calories and too many hours at a work. As well as working, many people are responsible for looking after children or elderly relatives and often don’t take the time to look after themselves properly. As a result they end up with too much stress and not enough rest and this has implications for their weight and general well-being. If someone is already experiencing stress, the last thing they need to do is add to that stress by going on a diet.

The definition of a diet is ‘the collection of things you eat every day to give your body the nourishment it needs’, in other words it’s what you eat every day. One of the main reasons diets don’t work is because of how we associate with them. Rather than seeing them as something we do every day for the rest of our lives, we see them as a temporary arrangement, a sort of holiday if you like. But when we go on holiday we always start to think about the time when we will return home at some point.

It stands to reason that we view diets in the same way. When we’re on a diet we look at it as being temporary and look forward to the time when we can go back to normal. Of course, with such a mindset, it’s obvious that when we return to normal, we also return to all our bad habits and poor choices. After all, that is exactly what we planned all along.

We simply return from the diet to the same old modern lifestyle with all the stresses and strains associated with it, just as we do when we take a holiday. Is there any wonder that the vast majority of diets fail and that the average woman spends 38 years of her life on a diet. Maybe it’s time to look for alternative means of healthy weight loss without dieting.
